Snippetson gelding Scenic George made an encouraging return to racing on Sunday when producing a tenacious win in the Groundhog Day @ Northam Maiden (1000m).
The three-year-old jumped from the outside barrier in a six-horse field and was posted three-wide without cover throughout running, however, he responded to jockey Brad Parnham’s urgings in the straight and dug in deep at his first start since December 29.
He hit the front passing the 200m mark and was able to hold off Setagaya ($6) by a long neck, with Diamonds’n’rubies ($2.30) a further nose away in third place.
Scenic George placed on four occasions as a two-year-old last season before failing to come up at his last preparation during summer but he appears set for a fruitful campaign this time in.
The Scenic Lodge-bred gelding has now had 11 career starts for a win and four minor placings.
Pearce Racing has prepared 70 winners for the 2024/25 season to date, the second highest tally in WA, with less than eight weeks remaining.
