Lightly-raced four-year-old Hezangelic made a top return to racing at Pinjarra on Thursday when taking out State Wide Turf Handicap (1000m).

Having his first race start since November 16 last year, the son of Universal Ruler was also having his first ever start on the Pinjarra straight course when leading throughout.

The gelding jumped an $8 chance before finding the front under apprentice Zephen Johnston-Porter and then extending his margin over the final stages to defeat race-favourite Sniper’s Son ($2.60) by just under one-and-a-half lengths.

Pingers ($7) finished a further head away in third place.

Bred by Daniel and Ben Pearce’s father Colin, Hezangelic is a three-quarter brother to the stable’s former star Angelic Ruler.

The flashy bay has been plagued by soundness issues throughout his career but has now had nine starts for two wins, three minor placings and $71,560 in total earnings.

Pearce Racing will saddle up Madame Magic, Platinum Shot, Richanco, Zing To Win, Blue Rocket and Soso Lucky at Saturday’s Ascot meeting.
