Spirit Of Boom gelding Exceltrain landed the first win of his campaign third-up from a spell at Mount Barker on Sunday when justifying his favouritism in the Cartehil Handicap (1200m).
Starting at $2.60 with Chris Parnham aboard, the four-year-old relished a drop in class and managed to slot into the one-out and one-back position from barrier seven before working into the clear on straightening.
He responded to Parnham’s urgings over the final stages and lifted under his 60.5kg impost to reel in race-leader Agent Jay ($11) and score by just over a half length, with Village Girl ($8) a further neck away in third place.
Bred and part-owned by Oakland Park, Exceltrain has now won four of his 12 career starts to date and looks destined to progress back to city class now.
Pearce Racing’s other two runners on the day, Ultimate Style and Hoochie Gucci, finished third and fourth in their respective races.
