Ben Pearce racing saddled up the race favourite Don’tgetcaught in a BM 72 handicap over 2350 m in race three on the card with W Pike aboard jumping from barrier five in a field of seven.
As the operator pressed the button, the seven starters departed the gates over the 2350m at Ascot in the Perth Waitangi day at Ascot February 6, racing on a good 4, and as they sorted it was Andi’s Boy the first into stride with Cougar Express, shadowing Fulgur for second with the latter in third, Galaxy Prince was next with Don’tgetcaught throwing the head around a bit as the field past the judge the first time around.
As the field past around the back, the tempo had slowed to a dawdle with no change to the order as Andi’s Boy lead the field, Cougar Express was still on the outside of Fulgur, Galaxy Prince was still prominent with Don’tgetcaught at the tail of the field, with Pike ready to pounce, on entering the home turn.
On entering the straight Cougar Express cruised up and took the lead off Andi’s Boy, going out by about a 1/2 length, then three quarters of a length, until heading mid way down the straight, when the well prepared Ben Pearce runner, gobbled up the race leader, with Pike fully winding up the 5-year-old gelding to race clear by the the TAB touch sign to deliver win 6 at start number 29 for the connections by a length on the line to Couger Express with no third dividend shown for Fulger, in third.
