Epaulette gelding Decoration landed the first win of his campaign with a strong performance at Kalgoorlie on Sunday.

Ridden by Tash Faithfull, the rising five-year-old started on the second line of betting at $3.10 in the Goldfields Variety Handicap (1760m) and relished a rise in distance at his fourth start back from a spell.

Faithfull sent the big bay forward from barrier seven and the pair settled outside the leader before hitting the front turning for home and kicking clear to defeat Gondrinkin ($31) by almost one-and-a-half lengths on the line.

Race-favourite Feuding ($2.50) finished a further long neck away in third place.

Decoration’s previous win was at the exact same track and distance on Kalgoorlie Cup day last year and he now shapes as a potential contender for the $100,000 Coolgardie Cup (1760m) on September 7.

The Oakland Park-bred gelding’s latest victory takes his career record to 22 starts for four wins, nine minor placings and $172,065 in total earnings.

Pearce Racing and Oakland Park combined for three winners last week, with stablemates Sherpa Express and Famous Dain saluting at Northam and Belmont prior to Decoration’s Kalgoorlie triumph.

The stable has prepared 79 winners in the 2024/25 season, the second-highest tally in WA, with only four days of the season remaining.
