Chanzig had plenty of ground to make up on the home turn of his race debut but the exciting youngster powered home over the top of his opposition to provide Ben Pearce Racing with an important victory at Ascot.
Chanzig appeared in the Crown Golden Ale 2YO Plate, which was the opening event of Perth racing’s biggest day, featuring the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes and Group 1 Railway Stakes.
The War Chant gelding won two trials leading into the $60,000 event but Chanzig got under many punters’ guards after bookies eased his price to $16 before late money pushed his quote back into $13 by start time.
Pearce admitted to a “little bit each way” on Chanzig before the juvenile charged home from back in the field to complete a perfect debut outing with a victory by three-quarters of a length under the perfect guidance of Alan Kennedy.
“It was a good win. It’s hard going in with a two-year-old because you never really know what they are going to do until they are there,” Pearce told Perth Racing TV.
“He’s done a nice job.”
Chanzig is the first winner for War Chant to emerge from leading WA breeder Yarradale Stud, which stands the 2000 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner permanently after initially shuttling to Australia from the famous Three Chimneys Farm in the US.
Pearce said War Chant’s stock had impressed him sufficiently to buy a few of them at Perth’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
“I have got another one that is related to Vampi Lass and he looks a nice horse as well,” Pearce said.
“They sold well at the sales this year and I have heard good reports on them.”
Congratulations to Chanzig’s owners – Graeme Dawes, Adam Fairley, Garry Nelson, Steve Orrock, Garry Smith – and all involved with the promising galloper’s brilliant debut win.
