Cheap buy Bird’s The Word scored the third win of his campaign at York on Sunday when taking out the Gary McNamara Handicap (1200m) in convincing fashion.
The former $12,000 yearling purchase started the $2.60 favourite with leading hoop Clint Johnston-Porter aboard and began well before rolling forward to settle outside of the leader.
The Galah three-year-old hit the front passing the 250m mark and kicked clear to hold off the fast-finishing The Anvil ($5.50) by more than a length on the line, with O’So Tempting ($31) beaten two lengths into third place.
The win extended Bird’s The Word’s career records to nine starts for three wins, one minor placing, six top-four finishes and $78,676 in stakes earnings and Westspeed bonuses.
The gelding is a chance of racing off a three-day turnaround at Belmont on Wednesday, with stablemates Hear My Prayer, Galaxy Affair, Cosmopolitan Girl and Sofia’s Symphony also engaged to line up on the seven-event card.
Pearce Racing has prepared 11 winners in the first six weeks of the 2022/23 season, leading WA’s overall trainers’ leaderboard by two.
