Spirit Of Boom six-year-old Exceltrain landed his seventh career win at Kalgoorlie on Saturday when leading throughout in the $80,000 Coastal Midwest Handicap (1400m).

Ridden by William Pike, the gelding was racing seven weeks between runs after finishing last in an uncharacteristically-poor performance at Belmont on August 16 but was able to bounce back to his best form when digging in deep over the final stages.

He jumped a $3.70 second favourite from barrier one and took up the running from the outset before finishing the race deadlocked with Close At Hand ($3.50), however, after a short deliberation the judge awarded the photo finish his way.

Cold Shizzle ($18) finished a further one-and-three-quarter lengths away in third place.

The Oakland Park-bred Exceltrain has been a model of consistency throughout his career with his 33 starts to date resulting in seven wins, three seconds, six thirds, 22 top-four finishes and $249,252 in total earnings.

The Pearce stable will saddle up God’s Grin, Toronado Rocket and Prince at Sunday’s Northam meeting.
