Consistent Galah four-year-old Bird’s The Word landed the seventh win of his career at Kalgoorlie on Saturday when overcoming a tough run in the Remembering Richard Hill Westspeed Platinum Handicap (1300m).
Backed into $3.10 favouritism with Clint Johnston-Porter aboard, the gelding was posted three-wide without cover in running and carried 4.5kg more than the fast-finishing Princess Chunk ($3.80) when holding off the second placegetter by a nose.
Race-leader Aidan’s Choice ($14) finished a further one-and-a-half lengths away in third place.
The durable Bird’s The Word was having his 12th start of his lengthy campaign when bringing up the victory and has now had 27 career starts for seven wins, nine minor placings and $207,698 in stake earnings and Westspeed Platinum bonuses.
The Pearce stable will saddle-up Black Sands at Sunday’s Northam meeting.
